I'm Johniel Bocacao, currently working as a Research and Data Analyst at MBIE. Colleagues and classmates have applauded me for my attention to detail, ability to work in and lead teams, quick delivery, my panache and seasoned approach to presentations, and my drive to go further than what is required.

Working in the public service made me appreciate the power of technology to solve problems and drive outcomes that improve livelihoods and the common good. I believe it is necessary for people like me to be conscientious about the role technology plays in affecting our lives, such as how we use people's data and what narratives are shaped from that.

This is what I do at Hīkina Whakatutuki - MBIE, with most of my work focused on developing a next-generation data visualisation website to track and shape the sustainability of our largest export industry's practices. This has given me valuable experience and honed my interest in user experience design, front-end development, back-end development and data wrangling.

In my spare time, I like to play the piano, sing classical and musical theatre, doing yoga and running.

2022

Delivered to Tourism Recovery Dashboard in anticipation of the border reopening to non-New Zealand citizens.

Promoted to a level 2 Research and Data Analyst, taking on project management of the Accommodation Data Programme, gleaning insights into the state of the commercial accommodation sector.

Acting as project manager of the Tourism Evidence and Insights Centre, our team's flagship product integrating not only our data and research, but resources from the broader industry, government and academia.

2021

Accepted fixed-term contract to deliver the Sustainable Tourism Explorer to market as an entry-level Analyst, taking up additional responsibilities such as peer-reviewing and wrangling data for releases like ministerial and cabinet briefings. Accepeted a permanent role in August.

Coursework completed includes Contemporary Issues in Science, Environment and Technology, Artificial Intelligence fundamentals, System and Network Security, Database System Engineering.

2020

Joined the 2020-2021 Analytics and Research in Government Cohort working at Hīkina Whakatutuki - Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. Successfully finished a minimum viable product of the Sustainable Tourism Explorer, a new website tracking the sustainability of tourism industry practices. Engaged with professional development courses, such as systems thinking, project management, problem solving, geospatial technology, algorithms in the public sector.

Coursework completed includes Algorithms and Data Structures, Software Development and Software Design in Java, Systems Programming in C and C++, Applied Statistics with SAS Enterprise Guide, Secure Programming (Cybersecurity), Clouds and Networking in AWS, written and oral communication for engineers.

2019

Awarded Victoria Kahotea Scholarship ($30,000), Dean's List. Coursework completed includes Introductory Data Science; Introductory Programming, Algorithms and Data Structures in Java; Engineering Technology and Design in C++; Introductory Mathematics, Calculus, Statistics and Logic for Engineering.

Undertook research project at the Institute for Environmental Science and Research surrounding data visualisation in R/Shiny and Tableau.

2018

Co-led chamber choir Blue Notes, Yearbook Committee, elected Prefect.

Awarded Johnsonville Youth Grant ($1,500), Peter Beilby Cup for Best Contribution to the Arts, Proxime Accessit, Tawa Borough Scholarship, New Zealand Scholarship in Biology and Physics (both $500). Spoke at the Tawa Primary Schools’ Citizenship Awards and Tawa College Junior Prizegiving about the significance of community and servant leadership in my successes and in being a good citizen.

2014-2017

Awarded Andy Pine Memorial Cup (top in Year 9), Honours Award in Contribution to Year 10, the Walker Trophy (top in Year 11), 1st in Level 3 Computer Science and the Flaws Trophy (top in Year 12).

Placed 4th in 2016 New Zealand Brain Bee Challenge. Qualified to NZIBO training stage in 2016 and 2017.
